THE RESITIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI

by Bertolt Brecht

Ark theatre 2022

The Rise of Arturo Ui, a masterful blend of satire, political commentary, and dark humor, remains extremely relevant. Written in 1941, Brecht managed to accurately predict many of the methods the Nazis would use to seize power.
The character of Arturo Ui is inspired by Adolf Hitler. Both men rose from the depths of society, exploited social unrest and people's fears, used rhetoric and propaganda to gain power, and ultimately destroyed millions of lives.
Set against the backdrop of Chicago's underworld during the Great Depression, the events of the play reflect the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime in Germany, highlighting the mechanisms that support and nurture fascism.
Ultimately, The Rise of Arturo Ui serves as a cautionary example against the allure of demagoguery and authoritarianism, reminding us how the manipulation of information can profoundly influence public opinion and consolidate power.
