ELECTRA BY SOPHOCLES
GREEK ART THEATRE KAROLOS KOUN 2020
For as long as her wounds keep on bleeding, she will never stop. Not until the blackness of the night gets drained. She will never stop. She will keep singing the endless song of rage. For her father’s murder. They tore his head with an axe; her mother and her cowardly lover. How can she go on living in the same house with his killers? How can she let her life fade away? How can a woman like her let this happen? What is there for her to do? How can a beloved blossom grow inside her? Not unless she thunders over the killers. Not unless she rises above her enemies. How, a woman like her? What else can she do?
The performance is both a theatre and music show that combines poetic speech, live music and acting. Dark, aggressive and atmospheric music turns Sophocles’s play into a heated hymn of the human soul against forces that try to impose a system of conformity. A band of actors —accompanied by one musician— reflect through action, words, songs and movement on the relationship between justification and submission, isolation and fertility.
